From deep-diving techno and house to star-gazing electro, the kind of dance music represented thus far on Organic Analogue has been undeniably rooted in the earlier strains of club music that spilled out in the 1980s. Boogie, Italo disco and early hip hop were the foundations for so many modern styles, and on this latest EP the label brings those influences to the fore by way of the supremely talented Croza.

Paris-born and Florence-based Adrien F Costes has made potted appearances in the projects Wonder Nature and Taylors & Costes, but this release marks his first solo outing with tracks that have been lurking on our radar since we first started Organic Analogue. A conversation that started around Costes’ encyclopedic knowledge of Italo gradually led to him revealing the treasure trove of home-made, boogie-influenced beats he was sat on.

The funk that pours out of the whole Lady Killer EP is undeniable – every rich layer of buttery Moog bass, every vocal sample chop and cheeky synth stab is primed for maximum impact. The sounds may tap up a direct line to the 80s, but there’s a distinctly modernist slant to the heads-down kind of groove that Costes cooks up, cutting and pasting all kinds of classic boogie signifiers and bending them to his own party-minded will.

There are other operators who pop, dip and spin to the same rhythm, such as Funkineven, Arp 101 and Royalty, but for us there was only one logical choice for remix duties on this release. Ad Bourke has been quietly slipping out electro funk and house jams for more than ten years, maintaining a low-key presence in the scene but delivering body popping gold every time. His version of “Night Heat” plays out like a hazy dream sequence injected with a little Italo strut, rounding this record out as a celebration of the deep-seated influences that guide Organic Analogue.

As an additional departure from our established norms, on this occasion we’ve taken the artwork outside of in-house and enlisted the design skills of Ignacia Ruiz and William Davey, who between them have laid down the perfect seductive visual companion to the honey-coated tones on the record.

While the Lady Killer EP may be a shift from the norm for OA, it feels like this vibe has been with us since the start. Keep it locked for more equally wide-reaching electronic goodness in the future.
